I went to Hotel Junior Kuppanna after reading so many glorious reviews about it, especially after surfing a decent review about it in The Hindu Metro Plus. So I thought of visiting it and went to the hotel. I have to confess that the location, parking, cleanliness did not disappoint me.
But as soon as the menu card was handed over to me, I was left high & dry. There were lots of spelling mistakes in the English Menu Card(since they have Tamil menu card also). Contrary to all their boasting, there is nothing new to offer in their menu.
Finally I decided to settle down to the Chicken Biryani. The sparkling server with his beautiful ipod touch took my order and sincerely asked whether I would like to have half plate or full plate. I ordered full plate.
After a brief wait, the chicken biryani arrived in a small plate which I thought is a side plate. But contrary to my opinion it was full plate.
It is not my intention to criticize or discourage the new entrants into the city. But in the name of tradition and experience, these days several hotels are coming with money motive and this Junior Kuppanna appears to be no exception.
The chicken biryani is very stale and the rice used for it appeared like a PDS rice. The gravy given with the biryani is so sick. One more important thing I would like to mention here is that in the name of tradition and old formulas, these people are resorting to some masala ingredients which are very pungent, viz., grinding peppers with green chilli etc.
It was so bad that immediately i got a bout of nausea and has to take one lime soda to appease that taste.
They charged Rs.140/- for this biryani for which there is no justification or reason. Comparatively, Buhari, Ente Keralam, Simran Apakadai offfers good quantity and stuff.
This Junior Kuppanna has to really think about their menu, prices and recipes, if they really want to have a mettle in Chennai's fast growing hotel industry.
